The Stairway to Heaven

August 25th, 2016

As I lay on my bed, feet propped up against the headrest, and type away at this blog post, I can't help but think that I've gotten so far with this blog in the last few days. I started something that I have no idea of doing, and started turning it into something that I'm quite enjoying, even if my videos say the contrary.

My time here is becoming better and better. In a matter of a week (I arrived on August 18th), I can understand and listen in to the random people passing by, and I even have the thought of conversing with them. Just the thought alone is a major step in my path towards becoming fluent.

This path reminds me of something that I was talking about with my host mom, Julia, the other day. We were talking about my goals for the Russian language, and I decided to say that I wasn't going to quit until I could write and speak like Pushkin. She laughed and told me that it was a very high goal. My response? Those are the best ones. And then I proceeded to tell her that I like Gogol more than Pushkin.

Now, on the topic of food. I decided to finally go and buy my own food since I was with my friend Nathaniel for a good bit after class today. We decided to try out the Декабрист Cafe. He ordered some bread with an espresso, and I got a Shawarma and a cappucino. In my opinion, the Shawarma wasn't really a shawarma, but more of a burrito. It was good, but they used ground beef instead of the actual meat used in a shawarma. This is making me miss my favourite mediterranean place, Fatoush, even more and more.

Now, I did finally eat a blini from Теремок, a blini chain in Russia. I got the Italian Blini, Пельмени, and квас. I was very mad they did not have the Royal blin, but it's whatever for now. It was good, and it was a good way to eat dinner.

Now, I did finally get the information I needed about joining a gym here in Russia. The only problem is that I need to wait for my credit card payment to go through, because thanks to my lovely bank, they'll charge me a ton for using it, and there's a huge chance it might not even work half the time. So Discover, thank you for being so reliable. And thank you Chase, for being so reliable that you might not work all the time.

Now, back to today. I went with my friend Nathaniel to Saint Isaac's Cathedral (Исаакиевский Собор) and for 200 Rubles (about 3 bucks) we got to go up to the top (super long climb) and even go into the museum area. It's always well woeth the view, and when we went in and up, there was little to no people, which is the nice thing about going with just a friend.

Upon returning home, I decided to start and finish my homework, which took me a few hours sadly. My host mom arrived later on and made dinner, and Julia, Volodya (her boyfriend), and I discussed a myriad of topics, ranging from music, to politics, to history. They even applaud me for my knowledge of Russian Literature, to which I thank my Russian professors for. It was quite an amazing day, and my video blog will be quite long, mainly because of the cathedral. Hey, mini tour for all!
