The Kazan Chronicles: Kul Sharif

January 12th, 2017

I made it to Kazan at 1:38 in the morning. My flight took off at around 11:30 PM, and I read a few pages out of The Wealth of Nations, which put me right to sleep.

Arriving in Kazan, it was impossible to get on the public transportation, thanks to it being shut down for the night. Calling a taxi, I was surprised how much cheaper it was than in Petersburg (19 Rubles less!) and made my way to my former intructor, Guzel.

With Guzel's help, I managed to find the section of the building in which her apartment was located, and we started to catch up over tea. As time flew by, we went to bed since she had to work in the morning, and I was beyond tired.

In the monring, when she returned from work, and when I woke up (she opened the door, and the noise startled me), we went to the Kazan Kremlin, and inside is Kul Sharif.

This was my first time in a mosque, and I was fascinated by its beauty. It was interesting to learn more about something about which I only had a vague idea of. Inside Kul Sharif is the Islamic Culture museum, which is located in the basement.

The museum was spectacular, and it was pleasant to see how the Bolgar Tatars lived and practiced their religion.

We returned home shortly after seeing the palace grounds, because Guzel had another class, and I spent my evening reading out of The Wealth of Nations. Time to find a new place to go tomorrow.
