The Kazan Chronicles: Sviyazhsk and the Raifa Monastery

January 14th, 2017

I decided to leave the main city today, and make my way to see some locations just outside of Kazan. I inquired with a tour group the previous day, and went to their meeting place to the circus, and boarded the bus, which, of course, was packed, but I wasn't feeling very social.

Our firsts stop was the Temple of all Religions. It was beautiful, but we didn't stay long because it was under renovation.

We then went to the island city of Sviyazhsk, which was built by Ivan the Terrible in 1551 as a stepping stone to taking Kazan (which took 3 days, after many failed attempts.) It used to be a bustling place, but of course, has started to decline due to its inconvenient location. There is a monastery and a nunnery on the island, but they aren't much in use.

We had lunch at Sviyazhsk, which included the russian classics such as Salad, soup, and potatoes with meat. On my way to the bus, I was almost run over by a car, because the wind was blowing so hard, and I couldn't even hear it behind me.

The final stop was the Raifa Monastery, which contains the icon of the Holy Mother of Georgia, which was never returned despite them saying so. It also contains a sacred water fountain with holy water, and an orphanage.

The weather was freezing, and the places I went too were too small to take too many pictures. Also, I talked to no one during the excursion, and no one approached me, so it was well-founded.

Returning home, I got off the bus, and immediately slipped, which raised the conductors concern. A few other passengers helped me up.

I drank some tea with Guzel, and went to an escape the room even with Leysan, Guzel, and Anton. It was super interesting, and we escaped in 40  minutes. Our reward? Chak-Chak, a delicious Tatar sweet.
